The Guardianship of the Prince

I forget how it all began
but my heart tells me
about the scores of our time together
and it burns deeper than any passion.

A truth so potent
that I would perform any feat –
I would destroy the world
and I would save it
If it meant carrying out my charge
of safeguarding
The golden key that shines
beside me.

And though I always feel this urgency
do, more so tonight
Than any other in recent times.
I suppose old habits seldom die.
