Afternoon Excursions on the Settee

Pampered and powdered white
In flowing lacy adornments
Against blushing refinery
This was no time for revolution.

We’ll attend your salon
As objects of desire
While you talk shop
With the other philosophes

But now is not the time for our voices, our cackling
To resound the transformations
We all have yet to become.

Only to pose in the pearls of modesty
Imposed by your fears of what a woman can truly become.
